Mission Ocean

Presented by Global Ocean Commission

While the Joint Initiative’s primary focus is on US domestic ocean policy, there are many intersections in its strategy and the Commission’s proposals including issues related to pirate fishing and high seas governance. To advance its goal of improving how the US uses and manages our oceans, the Joint Initiative will be implementing a three year strategy focusing on issue areas that include: improving coastal community resilience, enhancing ocean and coastal infrastructure, and improving Arctic research and management. JOCI looks forward to collaborating and working with the Global Ocean Commission as it moves forward in its strategy over the next few years.

A Word from the Organisation

The Joint Ocean Commission Initiative applauds the work of the Global Ocean Commission and its focus on important issues, including, marine pollution; climate change; illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing; and governance of the high seas. Covering more than 70 percent of our planet, the oceans are an extraordinary and vital element of our existence—sustaining life on Earth by generating oxygen, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, regulating our climate, and providing a substantial portion of the global population with food, livelihoods, and spiritual sustenance. Addressing these issues is critical and we look forward to collaborating with the Global Ocean Commission to bring the needed attention to ensure our oceans are healthy and productive for this generation and generations to come.
