Mission Ocean
Presented by Global Ocean CommissionIn response to the trafficking of fishermen for forced labour, and in light of the dearth of official action to hold accountable the perpetrators of these abuses, Slave Free Seas has created a toolkit of strategies that can be used to obtain justice for victims of this form of trafficking. Slave Free Seas believes that there is a strong nexus between environmental and human rights abuses. As such, we have adopted an approach which is multi-stakeholder and research based, allowing us to draw on the experience of experts around the world. Slave Free Seas offers this toolkit for free, and is also able to provide consultation services where required.
A Word from the Organisation
The Global Ocean Commission should be commended for its work in developing these proposals. Taken as a whole, these proposals present the possibility of a sustainable future for the world’s oceans. Slave Free Seas is in particular agreement with proposals two and four, relating to high seas governance and IUU fishing respectively. The adoption of these two proposals would work to ensure a working environment that respects the human rights of fishers, and that restricts the ability of irresponsible fishing operators to perpetrate labour abuses of their workforce.
