Mission Ocean

Presented by Global Ocean Commission

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is mandated to build the capacity of its Member States to understand and protect the marine environment. This includes, inter alia, monitoring radionuclides and other pollutants in the marine environment, such as heavy metal, pesticides and hydrocarbons. The IAEA environment laboratories also host the Ocean Acidification - International Coordination Center.

A Word from the Organisation

The IAEA congratulates the Global Ocean Commission on its work and notes with great interest its proposals in response to several of the main challenges and threats to the high seas. The underlying premise that something needs to change in the marine environment is evidenced by the growing threats of ocean acidification, marine pollution and unsustainable fishing practices. The IAEA looks forward to working with relevent partners and stakeholders to respond the proposals as directed by its Member States.
